What is Learning phase in Campaigns?

What the learning phase in campaigns is, how long it lasts according to Google, Meta and Microsoft, and what restarts it.

The Learning Phase is the initial stage of a campaign when the advertising platform is collecting data to understand how your ads perform.

During this phase, the system tests different combinations of ad creatives, audiences, placements, and bidding strategies to find the most effective setup.

As a result, campaign performance may temporarily fluctuate: costs per click or conversion can be higher until enough data is gathered.

How long does it last?

The length of the learning phase is not set by the calendar but mainly by the number of orders (conversions) the campaign collects. What the platforms themselves say:

  • Google: the bid strategy takes up to around 50 conversions or 3 conversion cycles to calibrate. A conversion cycle is the time from an ad click to the purchase. If data from earlier campaigns is available, it can be faster.

  • Meta: an ad set usually leaves the learning phase after about 50 results within a week of the last significant change.

  • Microsoft (Bing): a Performance Max campaign usually stabilises after 2 to 3 conversion cycles, depending on the number of conversions and seasonality.

A store with more orders gets through learning faster, a store with fewer orders more slowly. That is why no exact end date can be given in advance. The algorithms also keep learning after the phase ends.

What extends or restarts learning

  • A new campaign or switching a campaign back on after a longer pause.

  • A bigger change to the target, for example the target COS.

  • A bigger change to the product range in the campaign, such as adding or removing a large part of the products.

  • On Meta, also a change to the creative or targeting, or adding a new ad.

  • Few measured orders, for example with low traffic or when conversion tracking on the website does not work.

What to do during the learning phase

  • Let the campaigns run and avoid frequent bigger changes. Every bigger change can restart learning.

  • Judge results over a longer period, not by the first days. A short period and little data distort the results.

  • Expect fluctuations. During learning, the cost per order is usually higher and performance less stable. That is normal.

Summary

The learning phase is a normal and necessary part of campaign optimization.
It allows the platform’s algorithm to analyze data, adjust performance, and deliver better results over time. Once the learning phase is complete, you can expect more stable and predictable outcomes.
